Seasonal Allergies: The Naturopathic Approach

From a naturopathic viewpoint, allergies are often associated with weak adrenal, immune, and digestive functions. Natural treatments are used to support and improve those functions and to alleviate hay fever symptoms.

Diet: identify any food sensitivities that can be contributing to the body’s overactive immune response.

Acupuncture: works to balance the immune system and to relieve allergy symptoms such as: sneezing, nasal congestion, red itchy and watery eyes.

Nutritional supplementation: Vitamin C and quercetin are natural anti-histamines which when used at the proper dose can help decrease allergy symptoms. There are also other vitamins and herbal supplements that can help improve the body’s immune reaction to allergies.

Planning a surgery? Lymphatic drainage massage can help with recovery

What does the lymphatic system do?

One of its jobs is to transport excess water, cell fragments, inflammation, toxins, and waste out of the tissues. Lymph capillaries pick these up and transport them through lymph vessels back to the circulatory system, where the waste gets excreted through urine. The lymph fluid is filtered through the lymph nodes, where lymph gets thickened, harmful material is filtered, and lymphocytes are produced.

After surgery, there is increased water, cell fragments and inflammation. Lymphatic drainage massage encourages the lymphatic collectors to increase their contraction frequency from 10-12 times per minute up to 60 times per minute, resulting in more fluid and waste being transported out of the body.

Lymphatic drainage also helps with the inflammation and swelling, increasing the range of motion and ease of movement, and decreasing pain. Since too much inflammation causes scar tissue and fibrosis, lymphatic drainage decreases scar tissue formation.

You can start treatment the same day of your surgery and can have at least three treatments a week the first two weeks. Lymphatic massage is very gentle, so it’s perfect after surgery since you will be more sensitive to touch.

It is also a good idea to get one lymphatic drainage massage prior to surgery, so that your lymphatic system will be working optimally before the surgery.

Featured article: Pull weeds, not muscles

With the warm weather approaching, many are beginning to remember the gardens that have been hidden under the snow for the past months. Gardening is the perfect way to contribute to the environment and get moving with the benefit of loads of vitamin D. However, bending, shoveling, and pulling weeds can also pull muscles, induce injury, and cause aches and pains. [Read more]
