Let’s talk a little about sleep

Getting a good nights sleep is crucial for your health, healing, and recovery. While sleeping, your body goes into repair and regenerate mode – where special cells take out the garbage and clean up.

The quality and quantity of sleep impacts your body’s ability to repair and grow tissue, bone, and muscle and affects your immune system. With COVID restrictions easing, it’s important to keep your immune system functioning optimally. A study showed having sleep restricted by four hours in just one night resulted in a 70% drop in natural killer cell activity. These are important fighter cells that respond quickly to a wide variety of invaders.

Adults generally require seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep a night.

Tips to help with a better night’s sleep and quicker recovery

  • Go to bed and get up at the same time every day
  • Avoid screens two hours before bed and dim or shut off lights
  • Sleep in a dark and cool environment
  • Write thoughts down in a journal before bed to avoid excessive thinking
  • Avoid caffeine past 1 pm and avoid alcohol

Sleep well!
