Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Please join YOUR HEALTH in making a difference in the lives of Canadian children, teens and adults living with autism today.

Our clinic is participating in Walk Now for Autism to help find the missing pieces of the autism puzzle. Autism one of the most common developmental disorder in the North America, affecting one in every 150 children born today. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research is crucial. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Not only must we find ways to improve the quality of life for children and adults with autism, but we also must find a cure, and soon.

Walk Now for Autism is our chance to make a difference in the autism community by raising money for autism research and heightening public awareness. Please join YOUR HEALTH as we raise money to help fund essential research. You can donate to Walk Now for Autism and/or join our team online using the links at the bottom of this page. Donations can also be mailed to Autism Speaks Canada using the donation form located on our page or send the clinic a cheque made out to Autism Speaks Canada. All funds raised in Canada, stay in Canada to support the work of Canadian researchers and the mission of Autism Speaks Canada.

The 6th annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks takes place Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 10:00am at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto.

Basic Taping Skills Workshop

Strapping and taping techniques give support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion, and can also help prevent injury as well as protect the athlete from re-injury whilst returning to sport. The role of tape is to limit the movement in an injured joint to prevent excess or abnormal movement. In addition it should provide support to the muscles surrounding the joint that may be under additional strain due to the ligament injury.

Another benefit of taping is thought to be the enhanced proprioception (or kinaesthetic feedback) that the tape provides during movement (or in other words it is thought to improve co-ordination). For example if a taped ankle starts to invert (turn over) during a jump then the tape will restrict this and inform the body that it needs to contract muscles to prevent this movement in the ankle. Without this feedback the athlete may be unaware the ankle has started to invert and land on it badly injuring it again. Tape can also be used to protect unstable joints where repeated or severe ligament damage has resulted in stretching of the ligaments and joint laxity.

Tape should only be used in conjunction with a proper rehabilitation program including stretching, mobility and strengthening exercises.

When: Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Time: 5:00pm

Where: YOUR HEALTH Wellness Centre

This workshop is open to anyone who works with athletes or sports teams who would like to learn a few basic first aid and stabilizing taping techniques.
