Why does my neck hurt when I sit at my desk?
Dr. Sarah Simison - BHK, DC
Today’s use of computers, and days that are mostly spent crouched over a desk, can leave your neck and upper back tense and sore. The posture we sit in daily creates rounded shoulders and a head constantly stuck out staring at a computer screen. This results in soreness and tightness in the upper back neck and pectoral muscles, and a weakness in the mid back muscles and front neck muscles. This syndrome is referred to as Upper Cross Syndrome and is the result of chronic poor posture and not enough attention to the rest of our bodies.
Chiropractic care, including myofascial release techniques, and spinal manipulations can help to alleviate the tight and tense muscles and to mobilize the restrictions in the joints that result from the tension. However, visiting a chiropractor once or twice a month isn’t enough. Those muscles which have become inhibited and weak due to misuse need to be retrained and their endurance capacities increased. Only by retraining these muscles can you achieve lasting results that will support and reinforce the treatment you get from your Chiropractor.
When treating Upper Crossed Syndrome, I like to focus on giving you relieving
poses that take only minutes to do and can be performed throughout your
work day in order to relieve the stress on tight muscles, as well as prescribing
home exercises that will develop the endurance needed throughout your postural
muscles.
By becoming an active participant in your Chiropractic care, you can improve
your own resilience and bring some bounce back into your daily routine!
