YOUR HEALTH and Music for ASD
Daniel Rosso - Instructor Therapist, B.A. (Hons), B.Ed, O.C.T.
YOUR HEALTH now has music services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder! This new program utilizes the principles of IBI to teach piano and music skills to children with ASD. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available.
Children with ASD may have difficulty comprehending, communicating, remaining attentive, establishing relationships with others and expressing emotions. Music has nonverbal, creative, structural, and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self- expression, communication, and personal development.
After an initial assessment, individual intervention plan for your child to include global objectives such as: developing his/her awareness of himself/herself and his/her environment, strengthening his/her self-esteem, expanding his/her verbal and non-verbal communication skills, social skills and his/her ability to express his/her emotions, improving the ability to pay attention to task, improving memorization skills, etc. Your child may be invited to participate in vocal and/or instrumental improvisations, singing activities, movement to rhythm, song composition, listening to chosen pieces etc. A wide variety of instruments (guitar, piano, percussion instruments to name a few) are incorporated into sessions in order to satisfy individual musical preferences and to offer everyone a rich and meaningful experience. Your child then attends individual or group music therapy sessions depending on his/her needs and abilities.
Daniel Rosso received his Bachelor of Education at the University of Windsor and went on to study the Kodaly and Orff methods of music instruction at Wilfred Laurier University. He taught music curriculum within the Greater Essex and Peel school boards from primary through to Intermediate grades. He has taught music using a variety of instruments including areas of percussion, brass, and wood winds. Using the piano, Daniel developed a program that utilizes IBI principles to teach children to play a variety of pieces. Children gain a sense of accomplishment and pride while they walk through simple music theory and scales, eventually composing their own songs
