What does it mean to generalize?

Generalization means that the child who has learned a new skill can use this new skill any time, place and with different people. For example, it doesn't help for a child to know how to do up a zipper they have practiced in a cloth work book if he/she can't generalize that skill to zipping their coats, pants or back packs. Generalization should be practiced as soon as a child has learned a new target skill in discrete trial or other training methods. The objective is to transfer the skill to as many different natural environments and use as many different materials and with as many various people as possible. In order to do this the therapy centre, home and school all need to be involved.
